Last week’s episode of PBS’s excellent series Now dealt with a mystery that has gotten little attention in the media: Who killed the electric car? Was it Colonel Mustard in the library with a lead pipe? Or Mrs. Peacock, with the candlestick? One thing’s for sure – it wasn’t Mr. Green.
I always wondered about the reports of low demand for the electric car, when it sounded so convenient. Who Killed The Electric Car? is a movie coming out at the end of the month, and the director was on Now to discuss the suspects (the oil industry, the automotive industry, you the consumer, etc.) The film contains a clip from Huel Howser’s city-trotting magazine show in which he visits a dump where they literally shred cars like so many incriminating documents. He laments seeing such nice cars go to waste, and gestures over to a line of autos with “EV” printed on the side.
Perhaps, as this issue gains attention, PBS will air a gay British dramatization of it, with Sir Ben Kingsley playing the electric car. But for now, check out Who Killed The Electric Car? when it comes to theatres.
